The Helpful Plot Twist

Beta reader: "Love the plot twist on page 156."

I stopped at page 120.

Checked page 156. There's a plot twist. Brilliant one.

I didn't write it.

Asked my wife. She didn't touch my laptop. Asked my cat. The cat has no opinion.

The Vanishing Critic

Beta reader feedback: 'This character on page 89 seems unnecessary.'

Checked page 89. Character responded in margins: 'I seem very necessary.'

Asked beta reader for clarification. No response.

Checked manuscript again.

Page 90. New sentence I didn't write: 'The critic will not be missed.'

The Uninvited Character

Beta reader: "Who's Kevin?"

Me: "Who's Kevin?"

*searches manuscript*

Page 47. He just appears. Introduces himself. Has three scenes.

I have no memory of writing Kevin.

Kevin has a backstory now.

The Suspiciously Enthusiastic Beta Reader

Beta reader returns manuscript.

'Loved it. Changed nothing. Perfect.'

This is useless. Suspiciously useless. No notes? No 'maybe reconsider page 47'? Not even a single 'unclear'?

I check the email address.

Mom, we talked about this.

The Relatable Character Problem

Beta reader returns manuscript.

"I couldn't relate to any character."

"Really? Not even the gossipy neighbor who judges everyone's choices while ignoring her own problems?"

"Especially not her."

"Margaret. You ARE that character. I put you in the book. Page 73. Verbatim."

The Tearful Comedy

Beta reader calls at midnight: "Chapter 5 made me cry."

Me: "It's a comedy."

Beta reader: "I know."

The Beta Reader's Curse

My friend asked me to beta read her fantasy novel. 'Be brutally honest,' she said. I pointed out seventeen plot holes, four timeline inconsistencies, and a dragon that changed colors mid-chapter. She hasn't spoken to me in six months. Turns out 'brutally honest' is author-speak for 'praise me specifically but make it sound like feedback.'
